A devastating road accident marred Independence Day morning in East Burdwan, leaving 10 people dead and 35 injured. The incident occurred around 7 am at Nala Ferry Ghat on National Highway 19 when a passenger bus collided with the rear of a stationary truck. The force of the impact destroyed a portion of the bus, trapping several passengers inside.
Police said the bus was carrying residents from the Chiraiya Saraswa Ghat area of Bihar’s Motiar police station limits, who had travelled west to bathe in the Ganges and were returning home. Among the 45 passengers were five children. The injured have been shifted to Burdwan Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Eyewitnesses claimed the truck was parked on one side of the road when the bus driver appeared to lose control, possibly due to fatigue. The collision caused traffic disruption in the area as rescue operations were carried out. Police are investigating the exact cause of the accident but suspect the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
